On the threshold of her new life the aspirant knocks on the Enclosure door, and the abbess with the entire community assembled on the other side opens the door. The young woman kneels to ask for a place among the Spouses of Christ. At this time, she is admitted to begin her time of discernment called postulancy to see if this is where God is calling her. During this year she wears a short brown veil along with a simple brown jumper and a long sleeved white shirt . At the end of one year if both she and the Community feel that she is able to live the life, she will begin her novitiate.
The Novitiate begins with the reception of the Holy Habit. During this ceremony the Sister's hair is cut as a symbol of her break with the world and of the total gift of herself to God. This tradition dates back to the time of our Holy Mother Clare, when St. Francis cut her hair on the night she left the world. Then she is clothed in the Holy habit and white veil by the Abbess. At this time, she is also given a new name which signifies the beginning of a new life with God. The novitiate consists of two years. During these years the Novice is more fully incorporated into our life and she begins her preparation for her first Vows.
